Preserving your family history
The digital preservation of important records, such as those of your family, makes their access and utilisation by future generations a simple process. Unfortunately, the software and hardware needed to read these digital records will, almost certainly, not exist 10 or 20 years from now.
In an attempt to address these issues, the Historical Society of Mooroopna has adopted two measures we hope will provide permanency and accessibility to future researchers.
We have decided to digitize records of all written, pictorial and aural histories in our possession and to periodically convert these to next generation formats as technology changes. Copies of digitized records will be stored at a different and very secure site.
Additionally, we have decided to preserve these records on paper, stored in the most secure environment possible. Hard copies of family histories are now stored in individual envelopes in vertical files, in a stable environment above all known flood levels. History has shown us that paper records are readable 500 years after their creation.

Your Family History
You, or another member of your family, are best placed to record the details of your family’s history and especially their involvement with Mooroopna.
We invite you to provide details, photographs and any other documents relevant to your family to us for preservation. This may be done in the usual way by providing any information (biographies, family trees, photographs, copies of titles, acclamations, etc) in a written format or by completion of our on-line questionnaire or by a combination of both.

The Historical Society understands the needs of some for privacy and the need to prevent unauthorised changes. For this reason, we allow families several options if they entrust family archives to us.
Of course, the volunteers of the Historical Society can do only so much by themselves. The preservation and maintenance of these records requires money and, as a consequence, we are obliged to charge a once-off fee of $AUS50 for the lodgment of your family history. A cheque for this amount must reach the Treasurer of the Society within one month of your on-line lodgement of details for our conservation processes to begin.
